Jasper's HUB takes place during the EHS Advisory period and is a four-year relationship between Jasper teachers, a group of students and their parents that ensures that every student in the school has an advocate -- one teacher to whom they know they can always go for help academically, socially, and emotionally. For parents/guardians, the Jasper HUB is a pipeline to the school. It gives them a point person for communicating with the school in addition to their 9th grade school counselor.

Jasper HUB Curriculum
The curriculum includes lessons on a variety of topics that are important for our students, but may not fit into an actual course.  Jasper's HUB will take place during the EHS Advisory period and will explore the following topics:
  • School orientation - Adjustment to new school, school design, acquaintance with school community and scheduling issues
  • Academic skills support - Goal setting, study skills and time management
  • School connection and spirit - Communication and implementation of student government initiatives, athletics, academic contests, activities, and club promotion
  • Peer relations and effective social skills - Discussions on adolescent issues (coping strategies, bullying prevention, self-esteem building, mindfulness, and good decision making)
  • Career exploration/portfolio - Interest inventories, research, projects, interview skills, resume writing, and other activities that can also serve as artifacts for every student's career portfolio (requirement for all EHS students)
  • Current events - Philosophical inquiries, discussions and reflections on issues that affect and shape our thinking

Student Conversations/Conferences
One of the major goals of the freshman year in Jasper HUB is to help ensure each student has a healthy, productive and enjoyable transition to high school.  Students are trying to find who they are and their place as a member of a new school community.  Students learn best when they have a sense of community, feel heard and known, and feel safe enough to take risks.  To help with this, each student will meet with Mr. Mihalik during the summer as part of a "Getting to Know our Jasper Students" conversation.  It is informal and Mr. Mihalik will be able to help answer questions students have and address any concerns.  If nothing else, the students will get to know one adult at EHS through this conversation before the school year even begins.

During the school year, there will be 2 student-led conferences in the middle of the year and end of the year.  The purpose of these conferences is for the student to lead a meeting/conversation and review wins/successes, challenges, goals, etc...  Too often, we have meetings about students without involving them, but these conferences are the opposite since the students are leading the meeting.  Time is spent in Jasper HUB to develop the talking points and learn how to successfully lead the meeting.  These student-led conferences are intended to
promote healthy student development, support academic and personal success, and provide an ideal setting to practice advocacy and other important life skills.

Upper Grades
In the upper grades, the advisory program will continue to support students’ academic and personal development, with an emphasis on assisting students with their post-secondary planning. Advisors will collaborate with the school counselor so that students take advantage of opportunities available, including possible internships, dual enrollment courses with local colleges/universities, and/or other EHS elective courses.  Advisors will also work with students to guide them through the post-secondary process.

"Children's development and learning are shaped by many interacting factors - relationships, family and environmental contexts, curriculum and instruction - which come together to impact each child in a unique way.  To support each child's success and to achieve greater equity in both opportunity and outcomes, schools must take a whole child perspective and personalize learning in ways that take these factors into account."  -Key Findings and Implications of the Science of Learning and Development
