Jasper's Advisory takes place during the EHS Hornet Homeroom period and is a four-year relationship between Jasper teachers and a group of students.
All students at Emmaus High School have Hornet Homeroom at the same time every day - between 2nd and 3rd block. The Hornet Homerooms consist of students with mixed grade levels - some 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students together. In Jasper, we play by the same rules and have mixed homerooms, but our Jasper students are in Hornet Homeroom with other Jasper students and a Jasper teacher. This is important for a few reasons:
1. We want our Jasper students to have an adult at EHS who can be their advocate and help support them. We want students to have a teacher to whom they know they can always go for help academically, socially, and emotionally. Since Jasper students are taking several Jasper classes, we want to support them with a teacher who understands what Jasper is all about during Hornet Homeroom.
2. The mixed grade level structure allows for older students to mentor younger students. In the Jasper Hornet Homerooms, the upperclassmen are able to help the underclassmen in a variety of ways. This includes helping with projects and or helping deal with social/peer challenges.
3. Having all Jasper students in a Jasper Hornet Homeroom provides us flexibility and a time we can do Jasper things without taking away instructional time.

Student Conversations/Conferences
One of the major goals of the freshman year is to help ensure each student has a healthy, productive and enjoyable transition to high school. Students are trying to find who they are and their place as a member of a new school community. Students learn best when they have a sense of community, feel heard and known, and feel safe enough to take risks. To help with this, each student will meet with Mr. Mihalik during the summer as part of a "Getting to Know our Jasper Students" conversation. It is informal and Mr. Mihalik will be able to help answer questions students have and address any concerns. If nothing else, the students will get to know one adult at EHS through this conversation before the school year even begins.
During the freshman year, there will be 2 student-led conferences in the middle of the year and end of the year. The purpose of these conferences is for the student to lead a meeting/conversation and review wins/successes, challenges, goals, etc... Too often, we have meetings about students without involving them, but these conferences are the opposite since the students are leading the meeting. Time is spent to develop the talking points and learn how to successfully lead the meeting. These student-led conferences are intended to promote healthy student development, support academic and personal success, and provide an ideal setting to practice advocacy and other important life skills.
Upper Grades
In the upper grades, the advisory program will continue to support students’ academic and personal development, with an emphasis on assisting students with their post-secondary planning. Advisors will collaborate with the school counselor so that students take advantage of opportunities available, including possible internships, dual enrollment courses with local colleges/universities, and/or other EHS elective courses. Advisors will also work with students to guide them through the post-secondary process.

"Children's development and learning are shaped by many interacting factors - relationships, family and environmental contexts, curriculum and instruction - which come together to impact each child in a unique way. To support each child's success and to achieve greater equity in both opportunity and outcomes, schools must take a whole child perspective and personalize learning in ways that take these factors into account." -Key Findings and Implications of the Science of Learning and Development
